“Group Visits” - What are they, and how can they benefit my practice?
The excitement being generated over Group Visits has gained momentum over the last several years. According to the American Academy of Family Physician’s, from 2005-2010 family physicians doing group medical visits in their practice doubled, from 5.7% to 12.7%, and the trend continues to grow.
With the Affordable Care Act in place, the lack of physicians going into primary care, and the ever increasing burden for physician’s to see more patients, the group visit medical model is a real opportunity for providers to not only provide better healthy lifestyle support to their patients through more effective lifestyle education, but also allows them to reduce costs, increase revenue, and practice medicine in a more rewarding way.
Simply put, Group Visits is a medical appointment with an educator and billable physician conducted in a group setting, typically 10-15 patients with similar chronic conditions such as diabetes, dyslipidemia, and stress. These visits are designed to create a better learning environment, avoid redundancy, and inspire change.
